Chaos prevailed at 10 state-run colleges and hospitals across Maharashtra on Wednesday with the state medical education and drugs department discontinuing the existing medical informatics system abruptly for cloud-based upgradation.
“Doctors now have to manually keep a record of their notings and observations for each and every patient. Even pathologists and their staffers will have to manually fill up hundreds of blood test findings/reports on their computers for record-keeping. These reports would otherwise get uploaded on the healthcare management information system (HMIS), which the state’s medical education department has decided to discontinue for upgradation purposes from Tuesday midnight,” said a doctor from the Sassoon hospital.

At the Sassoon hospital, patients were seen queuing up to draw case papers, a pre-requisite to access services, on Wednesday. “Queues are the norm here. But earlier, it would take an hour to get a case paper. Today, I had to stand for four hours to get the registration number and a case paper for my ill mother,” a patient attendant said. About 1,200 patients seek OPD services at the hospital every day.
Experts said the state should have stopped using the integrated portal in a phase-wise manner, instead of discontinuing it abruptly.
